Jayden Blockley Quintet
Regarded as one of Australia’s upcoming jazz talents, Jayden Blockley, The winner of the 2018 James Morrison Scholarship is presenting the debut of his original works in Melbourne at the Jazzlab.
Originally from Perth, Jayden now studies at the prestigious James Morrison Academy, under the guidance of some of the most in demand Australian Jazz musicians, headed by James Morrison himself.
Before moving to Mount Gambier to study, Jayden was a regular in the Perth scene, playing in the Western Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) for 4 years. Through WAYJO, Jayden got to play with artists such as Mike Abene, Mat Jodrell and Troy Roberts. While in High School, Jayden was one of 3 Australians selected to participate in the Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony in the U.S.A. to study and perform with other talented students from the United States and Europe. Whilst in the United States, Jayden had the opportunity to study with names such as Miguel Zenon, Stefon Harris and Sean Jones.
In recent times, Jayden has had the opportunity to play with jazz giants like Wycliffe Gordon and Jeff Clayton, as well as tour with James Morrison.
Making his debut as a band leader, the Jayden Blockley Quintet will bring together musicians from Melbourne, Sydney and Perth, to create a distinctly unique sound. As part of the James Morrison Scholarship, the music played at the gig will be recorded a few days later at ABC studios and will become Jayden’s debut record.
