In much the same way that a conversation allows us to explore our intellect, improvisation allows us to explore our creativity.
This hypothesis is the basis of the "FM Conclusion Orchestra" (FMCO.), a new project led by trumpet player Felix Meredith, built on the simple premise that the best ideas are often overlooked or rejected for the sake of convention. Rather than a solid lineup of carefully curated musicians, this "orchestra" is a rotating band of different instruments, and a forum in which each musician can freely explore their own sound as it appears in a musical conversation.
This project was built from a session organised by Felix Meredith in January, in which six guitarists were given the space to explore their instruments together with no external limitations. The resulting recording, soon to be released as a 29 minute opus, best resembles the long-form compositions of Miles Davis and Pink Floyd, with stylistic underpinnings that could only be described as the sound of Melbourne's musical underground.
Tonight's performance will feature many of the same musicians, their instruments bathed in a diverse selection of digital effects, each exploring their instruments with freedom, skill, and passion.
Tonight's FM Conclusion Orchestra will feature many guitarists, with directions and trumpet by Felix Meredith
