MJC Presents: Bungalow (Japan/Aus)
Bungalow’s sound is sometimes introspective, sometimes bold and energized, and is highly emotionally engaging. The melodies are often simple, like folk music from the future, yet sometimes complex, the lines twisting and turning as if the band had uncoiled their DNA for the audience to listen to.
With their feet planted in the cool school tradition of jazz, Bungalow maintains an emotional vulnerability; their open hearts, held out for the audience to behold. This openness and simple clarity, is balanced with their virtuosity and group interplay, to create musical landscapes that may indeed express the intangible.
Based in Japan, Bungalow comprises pianist, Koichi Sato, bassist, Hiroshi Ikejiri, drummer, Ko Omura, and Australia-based, National Jazz Awards winner, saxophonist, Mike Rivett. Rivett and Omura both change up the texture sometimes on electronics and Indian tabla respectively.
When asked to comment on Bungalow’s latest recording, “You Already Know”, David Liebman, (saxophonist for Miles Davis in the 70’s) had this to say:
“This present recording is what modern jazz should be all about: changing textures, good communication on some very sophisticated music, and a clever and adventurous use of harmony and rhythm. But most of all, very soulful!! Mike and his fellow musicians have given the listener something worthwhile to mull over. Great work!! “- Dave Liebman January 2017
NZ born, Australian jazz legend, Mike Nock was also impressed with Bungalow’s latest recording.
“I'm loving this recording - old wine in new bottles. It’s inspiring to hear such creative and intelligent music being made by the younger generation – it gives me hope for the future!” - Mike Nock January 2017
