Acclaimed saxophonist and composer Rafael Karlen will be joined by James Sherlock (guitar) and Andrea Keller (piano), two of Melbourne’s finest improvising musicians, for an evening of lyrical and creative original music.
Rafael is currently based in Sydney after being awarded the prestigious Prelude Residency, allowing him to be the 2018 Peggy Glanville-Hicks Composer in Residence.
The trio will perform Rafael’s new compositions alongside material from his critically acclaimed album Trace.
‘This is a collection of rhythmless, colourful interpretations in unhurried settings where peaceful interplay between sax, guitar and piano is explored with ability and sensitivity’
John McBeath’s 4 star review of Rafael’s Album Trace in the Australian
‘The balance between composition and improvisation gives the ear a bit of structure to rely upon while keeping on its toes. Most of all, this music is about as beautiful as it gets’
Dave Sumner reviewing Rafael’s earlier album The Sweetness of Things Half-Remembered
