Sophie Min & James Sherlock + SHAMIN

Sophie Min & James Sherlock
'Thanks for the Hands' is Sophie Min’s first jazz duet album with the legendary guitarist James Sherlock.
Min and Sherlock collaborated at the 2017 Melbourne International Women’s Jazz Festival and at Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre in May 2018, opening for Andrea Keller. The music captures a delicate sense of beauty and the exciting liveliness of the two musicians.

This album features original works that strike a balance between the harmonic properties of the guitar and the piano. These works were inspired by my fellow musicians John Hoffman, Zac Hurren, and Kristin Berardi. These songs represent the emotional journey Sophie has been on in her last few years of composing. This collection of works celebrates the idiosyncrasies of James Sherlock’s incredible guitar playing.

SHAMIN
Performing the second set will be SHAMIN, an experimental jazz duo based in Brisbane, Australia. The group formed off the back of a recording session for Martin Kay’s Forage and explores original composition, unconventional rhythm, and timbre drawing influence from Matt Mitchell, David Binney, Dan Weiss, Steve Newcomb, Miles Okazaki, Mark Guiliana, Vijay Iyer and Tyshawn Sorey to list a few.

Comprised of Sophie Min and Benjamin Shannon, SHAMIN has just recorded its debut album and is excited to be performing a selection of compositions from the forthcoming release at JMI Live.
