MJC Presents: Saarelaht & Zion
Pianist Jex Saarelaht first worked as a duo with vibraphonist Alan Lee in the early ‘80s, recording the album “Two Out”. He also performed as a duo with guitarist Doug deVries at the inaugural Wangaratta Jazz Festival in 1990. Twenty-seven years later they were reunited at a Jazz Benefit concert, delivering one of the musical highlight performances, and reigniting Jex’s interest in the duo format. A pairing with Eugene Ball at the Ragtime Tavern, Preston, in February began what was hoped to be a series of duet performances with different musicians on different instruments, plans soon put on hold by pandemic restrictions.
Having worked a residency at Claypots, St Kilda, in a band with one of Australia’s great double-bassists, Jonathan Zion, for a number of years, Jex looks forward to this one-on-one meeting with him, exploring original pieces along with gems from the jazz canon.
